College Algebra DC

This course is dual credit via John Wood Community College and is classified as MAT113.

This course is intended for students who plan to continue their college mathematics education or to meet college transfer requirements. Topics include advanced factoring of higher order polynomials; solving quadratic inequalities; advanced topics in relations, functions, and their graphs; zeros and graphs of polynomial and rational functions; and exponential and logarithmic functions.

Prerequisites:

  1. Successful completion of Algebra 2 with a "B" or higher.

  2. One of the following:

    1. Successful completion of JWCC Intermediate Algebra (MAT020) with a "C" or higher.

    2. A minimum score of 21 on the "College-Level Math" portion of the Accuplacer test.

    3. A minimum score of 23 on the mathematics portion of the ACT.

    4. A minimum score of 530 on the mathematics portion of the SAT.

Calculus I DC

Semester(s) offered: Full year

This course is dual credit via John Wood Community College and is classified as MAT220. While the course is taught full-year at WHS, students only receive credit at JWCC for the Spring 2019 semester only.

This course is designed to introduce the concepts of the derivative and integral to the student interested in pursuing degrees related to engineering, science, or mathematics. Specific topics include functions and graphs; slopes and rates of change; limit theory and continuous functions; formal differentiation; applications of differentiation; integration; and applications of integration.

Prerequisites:

Students must meet one of the following:

  1. Successful completion of the following two JWCC courses:

    1. College Algebra (MAT113) with a "C" or higher.

    2. JWCC Trigonometry (MAT114), with a "C" or higher.

  2. Successful completion of a non-DC equivalent of both of the above and one of the following:

    1. A minimum score of 90 on the "College-Level Math" portion of the Accuplacer test.

    2. A minimum score of 27 on the mathematics portion of the ACT.

    3. A minimum score of 570 on the mathematics portion of the SAT.

Algebra 2

Semester(s) offered: Full year

This course rigorously engages in algebraic and geometric concepts already established in Algebra 1, Geometry, and other previous courses. By the end of the course, students will acquire and develop advanced algebra skills such as solving linear, quadratic, polynomial, radical, and rational equations; solving linear and quadratic systems; working with the four conic sections; working with functions and their graphs; learning basic trigonometry, probability, and statistics. In addition to acquiring and developing these skills manually, students will be introduced to the TI-84 graphing calculator to further foster these skills technologically. Completion of this course will allow students to greatly further their mathematical skill in future courses such as Pre-Calculus, College Algebra, Trigonometry, and Elementary Statistics.

  1. Successful completion of Algebra 1.

  2. Successful completion of, or concurrent enrollment in, Geometry.

Algebra 3

Semester(s) offered: 1st Semester only

This course covers the foundations of modern mathematics as well as cover additional topics not completely covered in Algebra 2. The first half or so of the course will focus on discrete mathematics, including basic mathematical logic, statements and proofs, basic set theory, algorithms, and number theory. The remainder of the course will cover the basics of linear algebra, involving solving systems of linear equations with matrices and Gauss-Jordan elimination, determinants and Cramer's Rule, and inverses of matrices.

Prerequisites:

  1. Successful completion of Algebra 2 with a "B" or higher.

  2. One of the following:

    1. Successful completion of JWCC Intermediate Algebra (MAT020) with a "C" or higher.

    2. A minimum score of 21 on the "College-Level Math" portion of the Accuplacer test.

    3. A minimum score of 23 on the mathematics portion of the ACT.

    4. A minimum score of 530 on the mathematics portion of the SAT.

Trigonometry DC

Semester(s) offered: 2nd Semester only

This course is dual credit via John Wood Community College and is classified as MAT114.

This course is intended for students who plan to continue their college mathematics education or to meet college transfer requirements. It is the study and analysis of the sine, cosine, tangent, secant, cosecant, and cotangent functions; show these functions are used to solve many types of problems involving the sides and angles of triangles; and how these functions are used to solve many types of problems involving cyclic patterns, some that very with time. Topics include definitions, properties and manipulation of trigonometric functions; applications of trigonometric functions; analytic trigonometry; trigonometric form of complex numbers; and polar coordinates, equations, and graphs.

Prerequisites:

  1. Successful completion of Algebra 2 with a "B" or higher.

  2. One of the following:

    2. A minimum score of 60 on the "College-Level Math" portion of the Accuplacer test.

    3. A minimum score of 23 on the mathematics portion of the ACT.

    4. A minimum score of 530 on the mathematics portion of the SAT.

Elementary Statistics DC

Semester(s) offered: 2nd Semester only

This course is dual credit via John Wood Community College and is classified as MAT109.

This course is a study of the collection and interpretation of statistical data. Specific topics include description of sample data, summary statistics, probability, probability distributions, sampling and point estimation, testing of hypotheses, and correlation and regression.

This course uses the ALEKS online learning system.

  1. Successful completion of Algebra 2 with a "B" or higher.

  2. One of the following:
