5S’s Growth Mindset Philosophy:
What is a “mindset?” Fixed vs Growth
A fixed mindset operates under the assumption that we each have a certain level of intelligence that
is passed on from our parents which dictates how smart we are. The growth mindset model sees intelligence as something that can be changed and widened through practice, effort, and focus.
Our Brain
The brain is constantly changing and adapting. When we try something new and challenge ourselves in exciting ways, our brains actually grow! This only happens when we are thinking critically and trying to work through a problem. The more time we practice something and the more effort we put forward, the stronger our brain connections become. Understanding that the brain is malleable and capable of learning from it’s mistakes encourages us to take risks and try new things.
Failure Philosophy
Failure only occurs when we give up on something without trying to solve the problem in a different way. When we make a mistake, our brain learns something new and adapts for the next attempt. Mistakes are something that we should be excited about because it’s an opportunity for our brain to change. Failures help neurons in the brain grow stronger!I encourage my students to try new things and be mistake makers!
21st Century Skills
I want my students to be as prepared as possible for the real world and to create individuals with a successful future ahead. In today’s world skills like flexibility, continuous learning, teamwork, communication, and collaboration are valued most. I want my students to be persistent and not to give up when things get hard. Grit grows when individuals are given more challenging problems where they have to think critically.
