Lately, there has been an abundance of supernatural action-horror manga like Jujutsu Kaisen and Chainsaw Man. The growing popularity of the genre has increased the supply of such series that now it is almost impossible to not overlook some really good manga. Phantom Seer is one such series that has a shaman-type story and has been running in the Shonen Jump for a few months now. However, despite having all the ingredients of a superhit manga, its run has been somewhat quiet so far. The most exciting thing about Phantom Seer is its execution of all that is great about famous manga that other series often struggle with.
The story follows Riku Aibetsu, a high schooler who is cursed with the power to attract vicious spirits, also known as Phantoms, to her. However, she is lucky to have Iori Katanagi, another shaman, by her side who always ensures that he protects Riku from the Phantoms around her. As the story progresses, Riku finally realizes the true nature of her powers and the dangers of Phantoms. Shamans use the ability to draw out Phantoms to exorcise them. Then Riku, Iori, and the rest learn more about Phantoms to draw them out of hiding in order to exorcise them.
Even though the synopsis might be bland and the manga has an unremarkable beginning, the series gets better as the story progresses. The character development is done remarkably well, along with its strong art. The Phantoms are grotesquely detailed, and the story is made even better by the art. Each fight scene or attack is well illustrated and the readers are bound to be impressed by it. The expressions of the Phantoms and characters are bone-chilling. The buildup to a Phantom reveal is suitably tense and they never fail to send the right message across to the readers.
The characters have sharp designs, and even the action is great. Not just the protagonist, but the entire cast is fashionable and attractive. The attention to detail of every character and each fight scene is outstanding. Most readers won’t be expecting such high-quality art from a little-known manga but with Phantom Seer they are in for a surprise. After the completion of the first volume of the manga, it seems likely that more will follow. It has a promising future, and even though it is yet to get the attention of the readers. The action-horror genre has a huge demand these days and it's just a matter of time before Phantom Seer gets its due recognition.
