If a student is using a computer to generate written language secondary to poor fine motor skills, closely consider at what point touch typing is appropriate for the student to learn. Early on and at a young age, typing with whatever fingers they are comfortable with may be the best use of their time and energy. Completing a typing program can still be very useful as it helps the student to become familiar with letter layout and common keyboard functions.
