Creative Writing II: Writer's Studio is designed to help students focus on refining their editing technique and cultivating stamina in their writing in order to create and edit more long-form work. Students will continue to study and practice characterization, plot structure, and different points-of-view, but with an eye toward building a deeper understanding of what separates good writing from great writing. The class is both individualized and communal, with open group feedback sessions at the end of each writing period. They will have the freedom to choose their story-lines and prompts, as well as participating in a modified version of National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo), to ultimately create a close-to-finished product. They will also research aspects of contemporary storytelling, as well as the traditional publishing industry. All of this is designed to teach students what to look for in their own writing groups beyond this class, and to show them how to continue to polish their writing craft long after the class is over.
