Foundation Facts and Fact “Roll-out”

The foundation facts are 2,5,0,1

Children must know their foundation facts as these will help them with the other facts. 2s and 5s and understanding the 1s are so important as you can use these to find any other fact if you know and understand the distributive property and how to decompose numbers.

Example: 7x7 can be broken down into 5x7 and 2x7!

The order:

    • 2s think doubles. Skip count by even numbers
    • 5s think of a clock. Skip count by 5s
    • 0s,1s show the pattern. Make sure these are understood!!!!!
    • 10s show the pattern. These can help with the 9s
    • 9s. So many patterns!
        • Strategies for 9s:
      • 10s fact - 1s fact (9x9 can be thought of as 9x10=90- 9x1...or 90-9=81)
      • Pattern within the answers. 9x9=81 and 8+1=9. This is true for all the 9 facts up to 9x9
      • Fingers. Hands on desk. Count over by non-nine factor and curl that finger under. Fingers on left are the tens and fingers on right are the ones.
    • 3s are the 2s plus 1s. Ex: 3x5 is 2x5 + 1x5
    • 4s are double the 2s. Ex: 4x8 is 2x4 + 2x4
    • The final 6 facts!
      • 6x6, 6x7, 6x8, 7x7, 7x8, 8x8
      • These can all be “Derived” or decomposed from other facts!
        • These can be derived or decomposed from the foundational facts.

Ex:6x7= 6x5 + 6x2

    • “Close to facts” Ex. 6x7 is 6 sevens. 5 sevens is “close” which is 35. Plus one more seven so it’s 35 + 7 = 42.
