Things to Consider When Applying for Scholarships:
DO NOT BE SCARED OF ESSAYS!!!! As the college access advisor, it is my job to help you apply for scholarships. Please visit my counseling office any time, and we can work on your essay together. (I will not write your essay for you, as most applications ask for you to tell them about YOU)
The majority of the time, when scholarships ask for an “essay,” it is typically one page (500 words). The better the scholarship, the more likely it will ask for a longer essay, so please do the work.
It is Never too Late! There are plenty of scholarships out there, and I find a good amount for you to apply each month. I send these scholarships through your school email, Instagram, and Binderly. I will also forward this information to teachers starting in March.
Applying for scholarships is also not just a senior in high school thing. You should be applying for scholarships throughout college.
Complete the FAFSA! The FAFSA stands for Free Application for Federal Student Aid. It is money from the government that can be used for college. That money can be:
Loans (money you have to pay back & different interest rates),
Pell Grants (money you don’t have to pay back),
Work-study (money used to pay for your income through on-campus college jobs).
You have to be a senior to apply. FAFSA is important because some scholarships require it. It is free to apply and can be completed in a day. It is free to apply and can be completed in a day. Please reach out to me to learn more.
SCHOLARSHIPS:
Seniors, there is a little trick to applying for scholarships through Utah colleges. It is called Scholarship Universe. Almost all Utah colleges use this application, the best way to find scholarships tailored to you. The best way to describe it is that it is like a dating website for scholarships. The more questions you answer, the more you’ll be matched with scholarships. You must have been admitted to a Utah college to use Scholarship Universe, as you will use your college student login.
*SUU is the exception, as they don’t use this platform. However, if you log in to your SUU Portal and select “scholarships,” you will find a bunch listed under your college (department over your major). Westminster and BYU also do not have scholarship universes as they are private institutions.

Here is what I currently have for March: March Scholarship Newsletter (I am still working on it)
More & More Scholarships:
There are some scholarship websites you can use to find scholarships. However, make sure to verify that it is a secure website, as you will be putting in personal information.
Here are a few you can check out:
Bold.org (I don’t use Bold that much because it is based upon a point system, but I have heard some students have gotten scholarships through them)
Local Scholarships:
There are plenty of local scholarships; the best place to learn about them is to go into the counseling office and talk to me or your counselor. If unavailable, please check out the scholarship wall in the counseling office, our Instagram page @dixiehigh_counseling, or Binderly.
Can’t I just get Scholarships Automatically?
Yes, you can! However, this is where your grades come into play the most. Please check out this PDF about all the Utah colleges: Utah College Financial Breakdown
