What is AP Summer Academy?

  • AP Summer Academy is a free, virtual, pre-AP program for any WHS student taking an advanced placement class in 2021-2022.

  • It is highly recommended for students taking an AP course for the first time, for students looking to get support on their summer assignment, or for students wanting to get a head start on learning the skills and content for their AP classes.

  • Expected student time commitment varies based on the AP class, but will likely be about 10-15 hours total from Aug 16 - Aug 27, 2021.

Why Should I Attend?

  • You will be better prepared for the demands of your future AP class(es).

  • You will meet your future AP teacher(s) and classmates.

  • You will get support on your AP summer assignment.

  • By attending the entire program, you will receive 3% extra credit on your first quarter grade in the AP class you participated in.

What Will Be Taught at the AP Summer Academy?

AP Content Support

  • Meet your AP teachers and get a glimpse of what you'll be experiencing in the coming year.

  • Receive assistance on AP summer assignments.

  • Learn content specific skills and get a refresher on important concepts for your AP class.

Teamwork and Collaboration Skills

  • Meet your classmates and build a support system amongst your peers.

  • Learn effective collaboration skills and how to participate in study groups.

Time Management Techniques

  • Learn how to manage the increased workload and rigor of AP courses by staying organized and prioritizing responsibilities.

Critical Reading & Writing Skills

  • Receive instruction on critical reading and writing strategies.

  • Practice analyzing AP questions and writing AP essays and DBQs.

Data Analysis Skills

  • Practice analyzing data and creating appropriate graphs.

Stress Management & Support

  • Learn how to reduce stress and connect with support personnel throughout the school.

Academic Conduct

  • Learn how to advocate for yourself and how to handle class absences and make-up work.

  • Learn about plagiarism and how to use and cite sources from the internet.

College Planning

  • Learn how to research colleges.

  • Learn about financial aid and scholarships.

Dates, Times, Location

  • August 16th - August 27th

  • Most of the lessons will be asynchronous and students can complete on their own time

  • There will also be some flexible google meetings with AP teachers - times TBD.

Logistics

  • Students will choose from a variety of workshops run by AP teachers. Students will then complete small projects demonstrating what they learned.

  • Expected student time commitment varies based on AP class, but will likely be about 10-15 hours total from Aug 16 - Aug 27, 2021.

  • Students will register by joining the AP Summer Academy google classroom code 33srcr3

  • Information will be shared in the google classroom and emailed to all AP students in spring 2021.
