The Civil Air Patrol (CAP) is the official volunteer auxiliary of the United States Air Force. The Vermont "Wing" of CAP consists of a headquarters in South Burlington and squadrons located throughout the state.
Vermont Wing has single engine aircraft, vehicles, radios, direction finding, and various equipment, along with pilots, senior members, and cadets who are ready to serve Vermont with various CAP missions.

Civil Air Patrol, the longtime all-volunteer U.S. Air Force auxiliary, is the newest member of the Air Force’s Total Force, which consists of Regular Air Force, Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve, along with Air Force retired military and civilian employees.
Civil Air Patrol’s 58,000 members nationwide also perform homeland security, disaster relief and drug interdiction
missions at the request of federal, state and local agencies. Its members additionally play a leading role in aerospace education and serve as mentors to more than 24,000 young people currently participating in the CAP cadet program.
Civil Air Patrol received the Congressional Gold Medal in 2014 in honor of the heroic efforts of its World War II veterans. Congressionally chartered 74 years ago, the nonprofit organization also participates in Wreaths Across America, an initiative to remember, honor and teach about the sacrifices of U.S. military veterans.
CAP now part of "Total Force"
When conducting missions for the Air Force as the official Air Force auxiliary, the Civil Air Patrol is now included in the Air Force’s definition of the total force. CAP has provided 75 years of support to emergency services, aerospace education and cadet programs.
In August 2015, the Air Force updated Doctrine Volume 2, “Leadership,” expanding the Air Force’s descriptions of total force and Airmen to now consist of regular, Guard, Reserve, civilian and auxiliary members.
CAP, in its Total Force role, operates a fleet of 550 aircraft and performs about 85 percent of continental U.S. inland search and rescue missions as tasked by the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center and is credited by the AFRCC with saving an average of 70 lives annually.

CAP has members across the country organized into regions and "wings".
The Vermont Wing is part of the North East Region, and has senior and cadet members in ready to serve CAP missions across the state and beyond! Vermont Wing headquarters is located in South Burlington, and squadrons located in Barre/Montpelier, Rutland, Bennington, and Springfield consist of aircraft, ground vehicles, photo and video assessment technology, beacon locator equipment, and an extensive radio network that can provide communications during times of cell phone and internet interruption.
Vermont Wing provides search and rescue and disaster relief missions for various agencies, including FEMA during Hurricanes Sandy and Irene, by providing incident awareness assessment for officials, via airborne photography of large areas of Vermont, New Jersey, New York and Connecticut. CAP has also supported the Air National Guard by providing targets for air intercept training and radar evaluation
Vermont Wing has active aerospace education and cadet programs. Additionally cadets enjoy many tours, camps, exchanges, a glider academy in Springfield, color-guard competitions and presentations, including at a Red Sox game!

This squadron is located at the VFA hangar at 355 Valley Rd, South Burlington, VT. It is made up of senior members who primarily provide aircrew support and cadet orientation flights. A business meeting and safety training is conducted monthly. Members also meet at various times to train and fly, along with a monthly exercise. The Vermont Wing Headquarters is also located here.

Green Mountain Composite Squadron

This squadron is located at the VFA hangar at 355 Valley Rd, South Burlington, VT. It is comprised of both cadets (12-21) and senior members (21+). Senior members mentor and lead the squadron, and both cadets and senior members participate in training exercises and real missions with the other squadrons.
