09/30/21 NHS Informational Meeting
President: Welcome
My name is Emma More. As President, I will organize the induction ceremony for our accepted members. I will answer questions about the membership and application processes. National Honor Society is an organization that celebrates students that personify the 4 pillars: Leadership, Scholarship, Service, & Character. Each of these traits must be demonstrated in your application to be accepted into NHS. This organization is a select group of students across the country. And can be included on your resume as an activity and honor from high school. NHS also offers scholarships to its seniors to promote higher education.
As a member of NHS you are obligated to maintain your grades, complete 20 hours of community service by time of graduation, and fundraise $50 per year of membership. In the Spring Semester we will host our annual candy bar sale to raise our funds.
For your NHS application, you will need:
1 Candidate Information application that indicates continuous (more than 1year) involvement in 1 activity. This can be 1 school activity (sports/clubs/marching band) or 1 community activity (church youth group, boy scouts, rec-league sports etc.)
YTD GPA of 3.40 or higher.
1 500-word Essay describing what leadership means to you and how you continue to exemplify it.
1 recommendations from managers, coaches, or advisors from the community. (not in school)
20 hours of community service. Students are expected to volunteer 5 hours per year of high school.
The faculty of WHS will review your anonymous applications and assign a score of 0-4 for each of the pillars. 0 meaning you did NOT exemplify the characteristics desired and 4 meaning that you did. You need an average score of 3.0 to be accepted into NHS. You will receive notice of your acceptance in the mail by Winter Break and the Induction Ceremony will be held in February. Please let us know if you have any questions whatsoever about NHS. We are here to help.
9/23/20 NHS Current Member Meeting Minutes
Attendees: Dominic, Jared, Grace, Taylor, Ethan
Absent: Gavin
Service: The service requirements for NHS are 25 hours/year of high school. To accommodate the lack of opportunities because of COVID, the hours have been reduced to 5 hours/ COVID year (2019-2020, 2020-2021). Current members need a total of 60 hours by graduation. New inductees will need a total of 40 hours by graduation, 30 hours by time of application. An alternative method to traditional volunteering includes DoSomething.org. This site allows you to participate in virtual volunteering campaigns.
Leadership/Character: Students are required to be involved in at least 1 school OR community activity.
Scholarship: This has not changed. A GPA of 3.4 is still the requirement.
Fundraise: Students are still required to fundraise $50 per year of membership. To obtain your box of candy bars, please turn in a Parent Permission Slip. Candy Bars will be sold for $1. Students are NOT permitted to sell during the school day. The only opportunity to sell at school will be during lunches. Students are advised to limit contact with cash.
