Mr. Downey was born and raised in Ventura, CA. Since graduating from Buena HS, Mr. Downey toured the country playing mallet percussion for a few years while also studying voice. He utilized these talents at Buena both as the vocal director for the Spring Musicals from 2004 to the present and as a Drumline coach from 2004-2005 and 2008-2010. During that time, Mr. Downey decided to get his B.A. in history and his social science teaching credential locally at CSU Channel Islands. Mr. Downey has since added English and Music to his credential, and was blessed to be offered a teaching job at his alma mater immediately after becoming happily married in 2012.
While he enjoyed teaching English for a few years, Mr. Downey was given the privilege of bringing Choir back to Buena in 2015. In 2016, Mr. Downey was delighted to become a father to a beautiful little boy, and finally was able to transfer to the history department in 2017 (to teach the subject that he studied in college, graduating Summa Cum Laude with program honors in history)! In 2022, he earned his Master's degree in Curriculum & Instruction from Grand Canyon University. Mr. Downey feels absolutely blessed to have the opportunity to serve his hometown community, and looks forward to sharing his passion for the humanities in the classroom, and his passion for music on stage!
