Kristina Hillesland grew up in Pasco, Washington, just across the river from the Hanford reservation and Pacific Northwest National Laboratories, but until she was in college at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, WA, she thought only rich people from the east coast got to be scientists. She worked with Richard Lenski and Gregory Velicer to earn her PhD in Microbiology and Molecular Genetics at Michigan State University by watching bacteria evolve to become faster predators. She then moved back to Seattle to start her research program as a postdoc with David Stahl at the University of Washington in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. In her spare time, she plays with her young son and knits.
