HIST 2700

Course Description
If both HIST 2700 and HIST 2710 are successfully completed, fulfills the General Education American Institutions (Utah State Code R470) requirement. If the course is not used for American Institutions' requirements, it can be used to fulfill the General Education Social & Behavioral Sciences requirement. HIST 2700/2710 is a Chronological survey of the first half of the American experience, beginning with the Paleo-Indian cultures and emphasizing American Independence, the development of the Constitution, the emergence of Jacksonian democracy, and the causes of the Civil War, through post-Civil War Reconstruction. Includes social, political, economic, cultural, and diplomatic developments throughout this period.


Course Learning Outcomes

Students enrolled in History 2700 will

  1. develop historical knowledge of America from the advent of European contact with North America through the conclusion of the Civil War and Reconstruction.

  2. learn the fundamentals of historical thinking by carefully reading and examining both primary and secondary sources, and by articulating their historical understanding through clear, focused writing about the issues and challenges of the past.

  3. develop the basic skills required to begin meaningfully examining and analyzing a people historically.
