BOOKS

Shrewd Samaritan: Faith, Economics, and the Road to Loving our Global Neighbor (Thomas Nelson/W/HarperCollins, 2019)

How can ordinary people foster human flourishing among the poor in meaningful and effective ways?  How can we give, guided not only with our hearts, but by our minds?  This book builds on two biblical parables, the Good Samaritan and the Shrewd Manager to explore the relationship between those living in wealthy countries with the global poor as they move through stages of Ignorance, Indifference, Idealism, Investigation, Introspection, Impact, and Identity.  It synthesizes the best academic research around the causes of poverty and critiques and recommends a variety of causes and programs to which ordinary people can donate their time and money, then concludes with roles we can each play in loving our global neighbor.

The Taste of Many Mountains (Thomas Nelson/HarperCollins, 2014)

A fiction novel based on a true story, The Taste of Many Mountains is about the journey of four graduate students assigned to follow the trail of coffee beans from a peasant coffee grower in the Guatemalan highlands to a café in San Francisco.  As their journey illuminates the extremes of wealth and poverty in the coffee market, they encounter a series of life-changing events that cause them to reconsider the purpose and meaning of their lives in a globalized world.  (Click here to see a short video documentary on the book.)
