The Wear Franklin Track and Field Team traveled a great distance to Halstead High School for the Regional Championships on Thursday. As usual in 3A, the regional meet was packed with high-quality athletes from 16 different teams.  A drizzle gave way to the sun and a cool day became hotter and more humid than this year had been so far, but that did not stop the Falcons as several of them broke school records and many qualified for state.

The boy’s 4x800 relay won the race to qualify with a new school record. Hunter Bailey broke his brother’s school record in the 1600, but narrowly missed qualifying as he finished shortly behind 4 of the top 5 milers in the state. Brody Prouty qualified individually in the Long Jump and the 400m.  This was only his second meet competing in the long jump.  This will be the first trip to compete at state for every member of the boys team who qualified, and it is well-deserved.

The girl’s 4x100 relay broke their own school record again to place second to state-leader Burlington. The 4x400 improved by 9 seconds to break a school record that earned the previous relay an All-State finish. Individually, Kaylee Williams and Haydan Walters both qualified in the High Jump with second and third place finishes. Haydan also earned a state spot in the 100m dash. Ciara Criqui claimed a 200m birth, as did Hope Crabtree in the 300m Hurdles and 100m Hurdles, with school records in each. The girls team placed 3rd to Cheney and Hesston, both teams that may very well end up on the podium at the end of the state meet.

Those who qualified will compete at the State Championships next Friday and Saturday in Wichita. More information to come.
