Imagine a day in the life of a Doniphan West baseball player. This year the D-West Mustangs will be co-oping with Riverside High School which is about 20 miles from DWHS.
Sophomore Dustin Veach said the team practices at Wathena on cold days. The coaches drive vans from Highland to Wathena so every kid makes it to practice. When it's warm out, the players will practice at the HCC field in Highland.
The home games this year will be split up to where some are at Riverside and some are at the HCC field in Highland. Coach John Paolino said varsity players have two games a week but they are double headers so they have about four games. JV players have one game a week but they are double headers so they have about two games a week.
Now imagine a day in your life as a track athlete. When it is cold outside, the track athletes have access to the Wellness Center at HCC. Throwers stay at the high school and throw indoor javelins and shot puts. The runners and jumpers will go up to the Wellness Center and work on their events. The Wellness Center has a wonderful indoor jumping pit and rubber track. They also have high jump mats and pole vaults. There will normally be about two track meets a week. Head Coach Nick Fuemmeler said the first track meet would have been at Falls City on March 26, 2024, but has been postponed to March 28, 2024. The Mustangs will not be able to attend this track meet because they will be helping run the Doniphan West Jr. High track meet.
