At DWHS there are a lot of student athletes. Some play multiple different sports and others stick to one sport. Here at DWHS, students can participate in football, volleyball, basketball, softball, baseball, track, cross country, and wrestling.
Senior Kaylynn Miner’s favorite sport is softball, which is also the only sport she plays. One thing she enjoys about softball is seeing how the team can grow in a few months. Kaylynn enjoys being heavily involved in softball. Although Kaylynn loves softball, she doesn't like not being able to go home after school.
“I’ve always pushed myself when it comes to academics,” she said. “However, during softball season sometimes I get in a lull where I don't feel like doing school work. But I always get my work done and turned in on time. So yes, it can be hard, but being in sports is never an excuse not to get your work done.”
Kaylynn has to handle all of the stuff she needs to graduate since it's her senior year along with softball and work. She is able to get her homework done by making a to-do list based on the due date of what she needs to do and she prioritizes what needs to be done first.
Kaylynn is one of the softball team captains. She is a great leader on the field, at school, and outside of school and sports. She is a very positive and supportive person and teammate. When the season is over, Miner said she is going to miss her teammates and coaches along with the game itself.
Freshman Lydia Keebler has already been a member of the volleyball and basketball teams, and now she is dual-sporting in both softball and track. She said, “It is hard to make time for both sports but I enjoy them both.”
She said she enjoys playing sports because she gets to show school spirit. It also helps her become a better person. She learned to be more respectful towards the other team and lift her teammates up when they are down.
Even though she is busy playing sports, Lydia doesn't think it's hard to get her work done as long as she focuses and gets her work done in class and when she has extra time throughout the day. To get her homework done, she finds time during the day to do it and she prioritizes her time at night. She does not enjoy missing classes on game days.
Lydia enjoys spending time with her teammates and becoming better at things she enjoys. She loves laughing and having fun in the dugout and on the field. She enjoys making her teammates laugh and smile.
