If students feel sick or have an ache or pain, they can pay a visit to the school nurse. Mrs. Johnson is the nurse for the students in grades 7-12, and Mrs. Holzhey is the nurse for students in the elementary school.
Before Mrs. Johnson became a school nurse, she worked as a clinic manager and nurse in a family practice clinic for two years. She also worked as a labor and delivery nurse for two years at Mosaic Life Care.
Mrs. Holzhey has worked on the med surgical floor in a hospital, rehab hospital, and family practice clinic. Nurses' jobs can be challenging, so getting the right education is important. Nurse Holzhey is a licensed practical nurse (LPN) while nurse Johnson is a registered nurse and has a bachelor’s in nursing (RN-BSN).
Mrs. Holzhey’s favorite part of being a nurse is interacting with students and helping them feel better.
Mrs. Johnson’s favorite part of being a nurse is being able to help students and helping them feel better. While being a school nurse is rewarding, it also has its downsides. Mrs. Holzhey’s least favorite part of being a school nurse is the throw-up. Mrs. Johnson’s least favorite part of being a nurse is the paperwork like insurance. Mrs. Johnson said she most often treats students for a stomachache while Mrs. Holzhey said that she most often sees students for stomach aches, coughs, and a sore throat.
“Being a school nurse is challenging but rewarding, you never know what the day will bring,” Holzhey said.
“Being a nurse is fun getting to help the students feel better and interacting with the other teachers,” said Johnson.
According to the website Zippa there are currently over 25,705 school nurses currently employed in the United States. 93.7% of all school nurses are women, while 6.3% are men.
