Welcome to MMS 200, your Special Project course! Your final project is the culmination of your studies in the BAMS program. This course functions as the 'shell' of your BAMS final project, which you will be carrying out under the supervision of your adviser. This page will help you get started with MMS 200.
During a BAMS workshop held on May 11 and 12, 2018, a talk about MMS 200 was presented which should help with orient you to how MMS 200 works.
You need to enroll twice in MMS 200 in order to complete it.
You are an "MMS 200a" student if any of the following applies to you:
This is your first time taking MMS 200
You are retaking MMS 200 because you need to resubmit your project proposal or have it approved
You have previously taken MMS 200 in the past, but you have never received a grade of 'S' for any of the times you took MMS 200
You don't meet all the requirements for MMS 200b students (see next section)
You might be an MMS 200a student if:
You wish to switch advisers. See the FAQ for details.
It is required that you have completed MMS 197 before you enroll in MMS 200a.
You are "MMS 200b" student if all the following are true:
This is at least your second time taking MMS 200
You have already previously received an 'S' for MMS 200
You already have an adviser
You need only about 2-3 months to finish both the project and your final report
You will be able to finalize and submit your final report at least two weeks before the end of this term.
You should plan to enroll in MMS 200b after enrolling in MMS 200a and when you are nearly done with your project and are close to finishing the final report. For many students, this means not enrolling in MMS 200b right after completing MMS 200a and using one or more semesters right after you enroll in MMS 200a to finalize your project plan, conduct the project, and write it up. Only enroll in MMS 200b when you think you are close to completing your project. You may want to discuss with your adviser the timing of your enrollment.
All MMS 200 students are asked to join the MMS 200 Google Classroom. You will be given instructions on how to do this by the MMS 200 FIC. Everything that you need to do will be documented in the Google Classroom.
Generally speaking, however, what you will be doing this term will depend on whether you are an MMS 200a or 200b student.
You will be putting together a capsule proposal, which a very brief description of a project you are interested in doing. You will be submitting that proposal to a special system we have devised--the AdCom system--to match you to an adviser.
However, if you have are retaking MMS 200a and have already been matched with an adviser, see the FAQ.
You should be finishing your project and getting ready to submit your final report.
For MMS 200, you will receive either an S (satisfactory) or a U (unsatisfactory) for MMS 200a. Your adviser is expected to let you know what you need to do to achieve an S (for instance, submitting a revised/improved project proposal).
However, it is worth reading ahead to see how you will be assessed in MMS 200b. Knowing how your final numerical grade will be computed will help you formulate your proposal better.
For MMS 200b, your adviser will be expected to let you know how you will earn your numerical grade. For instance, I would recommend three general criteria against which all students can be assessed by their advisers:
COMPETENCIES: To what extent does the project demonstrate the competencies which the BAMS program aims to develop?
SKILLS: To what extent did the student apply skills which a senior undergraduate student is expected to possess?
WRITTEN OUTPUT: Is the final report of the project well-written?
See this sample rubric, which your adviser may choose to adopt and/or adapt. A preview is shown below.

Read the specific Implementing Guidelines for MMS 200 (also embedded below). This document provides a much more detailed discussion on the assessment; switching proposals, projects, or advisers; and the role of the adviser and the critic. As you read the guidelines, keep in mind that MMS 200a is the Implementation Stage while MMS 200b is the Manuscript Stage.
