I usually offer three courses in the MA programme at the Department, apart from PhD supervision and directed readings for research scholars working with me. I may chip in on teaching other courses occasionally when there is a need. For the coming years, these are the three--
1. Writing Across Media: a broad introductory core course that takes a workshop-type approach to building basic writing skills, from straight news to explainers to analysis and opinion, applicable across media platforms. Usually offered in Semester 1 of the MA programme.
2. Science and Health Communication: This optional course provides an introduction to the theory and practice of science and health communication, from critique of media coverage of science, technology and health, to the strategic ways in which communication may be used to further social objectives involving aspects of health and science. In doing so, the course covers the closely related practices of science and health journalism, public communication of science, health literacy and education, and health campaigns.
3. Understanding digital media and cyberculture: Offered in the fourth semester of the MA programme, this course provides students with the background to develop approaches to the study of new media, the role they play in transforming and being transformed by society, the policies and practices that shape their development and use, and the place they occupy in our everyday worlds and in popular and scholarly imagination. We explore the history and assimilation of these digital technologies, primarily the internet and related tools, in various aspects of life.
I have on occasion taught a course titled Features and Analytical Writing, which is one of my favourite things to teach, as it gives me the opportunity to get deep into the nuances of good writing and storytelling.
