About Medicine Department

VISION

The main vision of the Medical School (Medical College) is to deliver a full package of medical education that cover broadly educated medical graduates who are competent professionally to practice safely and effectively. Graduates must have a solid foundation, not only to function upon graduation as a physician, but also be prepared to pursue long life learning with additional training deepen the knowledge toward subspecialty competence. Emphasis and guidelines must be placed on the principles, attitudes and values in the practice of medical profession, rather than on the acquisition of a detailed compendium of current knowledge or a comprehensive list of clinical skills.

The program package reflects the need of the health and development of the community

and ensures engagement of the society and governmental bodies in our localities.

MISSION

The Medical School has a documented mission statement, covering the aims and educational objectives to graduate competent physician, preparing them to meet the needs and demands of Kurdistan Region toward better health and safety awareness.

The mission statements and objectives are being set in participation of key stakeholders.

They are: Dean; medical college faculty; medical students; health and education authorities, health professional associations and health societies and representatives of community and civil society.

The curriculum must emphasize basic medical sciences and general rules for practicing

medicine. This should be governed by the quality and amount of the suitable information that should be taught which would qualify graduates to deal with the common and crucial medical problems in the community.

OBJECTIVES

The overall objectives should result in medical graduates who are competent and equipped with knowledge and practice to respond to the health needs of the individuals in the society, family based on a service that is compassionate, caring and taking into consideration human dignity, regardless of the gender, status and ethnicity. The competencies are well defined in the curriculum, which must be exhibited by the student at the point of graduation. These must include the skills of continuing professional development.

HISTORY

University of Sulaimani was established in 1968 and college of Medicine enrolled its first batch of (91) students for the academic year 1977-1978.The University including college of Medicine was closed down and transferred to Hawler (Erbil) city in 1981 and its name changed to University of Salahaddin; hence the college never witnessed their graduation in July 1983.The first batch of graduates of the college, therefore were the graduates of the University of Salahaddin. In the aftermath of Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in 1990 and the holly Kurdish uprising in March 1991 and establishment of Kurdish parliament and Kurdistan regional government, the University of Sulaimani including college of Medicine was re-established in15th. November 1992.The college celebrated the graduation ceremony of the first batch in July 1998.
