My Philosophy in Teaching

Having been a student and teacher in both-less developed and advanced countries throughout the world, I have developed a philosophical approach to the process of teaching. Primarily, I believe that knowledge must be conveyed to students in a fashion that allows them to receive it with the greatest facility. In order to complete such a task, instructors should continuously gain additional knowledge regarding their profession as teachers and should be ready to address every student’s inquiries. Ultimately, it is the teacher’s responsibility to motivate, encourage and inspire the development of student skills, often leading by examples as the teachers themselves understand that they too are students of life.

Teaching college students is more than a one-way street; teachers could learn from their questions and could develop novel teaching skills. I will always take pains to encourage students to share ideas and to engage them in methods of teaching and assessment that incorporate the widest variety of tools. When I completed my doctoral study in the USA and returned back to Iraq in 2014, I realized that the Iraqi education system faces critical shortcomings as a consequence of unstable political conditions, the security situation, and an economic crisis. So I believe that a number of challenges are in view for the reconstruction of education in Iraq, and there are important considerations that teachers ought to ponder. Among those considerations are the structure and plan of lessons, activities in and out of class, and goal-directed assignments that embody the teachers’ most realistic expectations of their students. As a teacher, I strive to guide my students to find the right balance between the pursuit of scientific knowledge and contributing to the betterment of the society in which they live. Joint discussion and active engagement of students concerning assigned materials should be vital to achieve the objectives of teaching and learning.
