At the Faculty of Medical Sciences - School of Dentistry, I am co-teaching Oral Medicine to Fifth class undergraduate students and Postgraduate students.
My Philosophy in Teaching
Oral Medicine is that area of dental practice, deals with diagnosis & treatment of oral diseases, may be localized in oral cavity or may be oral manifestation of systemic diseases, or concerned with diagnosis and treatment of medically compromised patients.
The lectures are prepared by power point and are presented by data show with open discussion with the student.
At the end of the course students learn:
1-Adequate knowledges about principle of investigation and diagnosis
2-Adequate knowledge of the anatomy of the head, neck, and oral cavity and are able to differentiate between normal and abnormal finding
3- adequate knowledge about definition, incidence and prevalence, etiology, pathophysiology, clinical features and management of the variety of diseases affecting head, neck and oral cavity like oral mucosal diseases, salivary gland diseases, temporomandibular joint disorders etc. as well as dental management, oral manifestation, potential problem related to dental care, and modification of dental treatment of the medically compromised patients.
4-Student are able to prevent emergencies in dental clinic when providing dental treatment for medically compromised patients through modification of dental treatment, careful history, physical examination, and any necessary medical consultation and they are prepared to handle this type of patient.
5-Importance of routine oral examination in early detection of some oral lesions that can be fatal such as squamous cell carcinoma.
6-Early detection of some systemic diseases like hypertension, diabetes mellitus, hyperthyroidism etc and referral to physician for proper management.
7-After graduation they work in dental specialty centers and private clinics and are able to diagnose dental and periodontal diseases as well as oral diseases, managing patients with systemic diseases seeking dental treatment in this way they can serve community.
