SOUNDWALK SERIES
Sunday, August 10, 4:00 - 5:30 PM at Unity Park
“What are we listening to these days, and why?” Prompted by this and other questions, Josh Rios invites you to this all-ages gathering to share and reflect on music in an open, collective setting. Together, we’ll explore how music offers resistance, pleasure, and curiosity. The event will wrap with a group conversation about what it means to share music in public and how shared listening can help us connect. Participants are encouraged to be mindful of language in their selections; this is a space guided by community respect, not censorship.
We will meet at Unity Park, 2636 N Kimball Ave, at the pergola. Please note the rain date for this event is Sunday, August 17, 2025 4:00 PM – 5:30 PM.
THE BUTTER CHICKEN BRASS BAND!
Tuesday, August 12, 6:30 - 7:30 PM at Unity Park
Chicago-based band Butter Chicken is a collaborative effort by musicians across several disciplines to explore the intersection of South Asian baraat (the processional part of a Hindu wedding) and a New Orleans-style brass polyphony. Their sound and concert experience combines the community, joy and movement of a wedding ceremony with the power and improvisation of a jazz group. Led by Catie Hickey (trombone, arranger), Kabir Dalawari (Dhol), and Akshat Jain (Sousaphone), the group features a rotating cast of musicians from the Chicago area, including Kyle Brooks (saxophones), Millie Ahern (trumpet) and Steve Bomar (drums).
