Paolo Giudici is a Data Scientist specialized in machine learning and risk management. He earned a Bachelor degree in Economics from Bocconi University (1989), a Master degree in Statistics from the University of Minnesota (1990), and a Phd in Statistics from the University of Trento (1994). He is Full Professor of Statistics at the University of Pavia, where he directs the SAFE-AI Laboratory. His research work focuses on developing mathematical models that measure the opportunities and risks associated with algorithmic intelligence and financial technologies, aiming to enhance their quality and safety.
He has been a visiting researcher at several institutions, including the University of Bristol, the University of Cambridge, the Fields Institute in Toronto, the European University Institute. He has served as expert for institutions such as the European Commission, the Bank for International Settlements, the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, the European Insurance and Occupational Pension Authority, the Bank of Italy, the Italian Ministry of Development, the Italian Banking Association. He served on the board of Credito Valtellinese bank from 2010 to 2018.
He has authored over 300 peer-reviewed publications and 3 books, with an h-index of 61 (Google Scholar) and of 50 (Elsevier Scopus). He has supervised 25 PhD and post doc students and coordinated several research and industrial projects, among which the Horizon2020 European projects FIN-TECH and PERISCOPE. He is editor of the scientific journal Statistics (Taylor and Francis), International Journal of Data Science and Analytics (Springer) and Artificial Intelligence (Frontiers).
He is an elected board member of the International Association for Safe and Ethical AI (IASEAI), member of the Europe technology policy committee of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), country chair of the Society of Algorithmic Intelligence (SoAI), and member of the Royal Statistical Society (RSS) AI task force . He is also fellow of the International Statistical Institute (ISI) and member of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics (IMS), the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM), the International Association for Trusted Blockchain Association (INATBA) and the Italian Statistical Society (SIS). He is a honorary member of the Italian Financial Risk Management Association (AIFIRM).
