History of the National Beta Club
The National Beta Club began as the dream of our founder, Dr. John W. Harris, a professor at Wofford College in Spartanburg, SC. Since the first Beta Club was formed in Landrum, SC in 1934, The National Beta Club has become the nation's largest independent, non-profit, educational youth organization. We are committed to recognizing and promoting high academic achievement, rewarding and nurturing worthy character, fostering leadership skills and encouraging service to others. The National Beta Club has worked with over six million young people in grades 5-9 (Junior Beta Club) and grades 9-12 (Senior Beta Club). There are now more than 420,000 active members and more than 8,000 clubs nationally and internationally.
Union Middle School Junior Beta Club Chapter
The Union Middle School Junior Beta Club Chapter, sponsored by Mrs. Moulds and Mrs. Goforth, was started in 1963. Our chapter currently has 66 members from sixth grade to eighth grade. At the beginning of each semester, invitations for membership will be issued to students who have an academic average of 90 without rounding.
Membership will require several responsibilities:
Attendance at all meetings
Payment of national dues ($15.00 – one-time fee through the eight grade)
Payment of local dues ($13.00 per year/ $6.50 per semester)
Maintaining a composite academic average of 88.0 or above (no rounding)
Earning service hours in club-related activities such "Make a Difference" Day, Canned Food Drive, Angel Tree, Teacher Appreciation Day, and other community service projects
Participation in the State Junior Beta Convention, if possible
