Program Innovation Resources

In A Call to Embrace Program Innovation, Meyer, Boyce & Meyer contend that innovation is critical for Extension to remain vital. They define program innovation as "the ongoing process of challenging and adapting to generate new ideas, processes, or products to strengthen impact performance," and contend that three core practices of designing, constructing, and evaluating programs lead to innovation opportunities. The following are accessible resources that describe the program innovation process, team and organizational factors that can be managed to improve program innovation capacity, staff development and other handouts about how to map innovation into your work and promotion plans.

There are many processes or strategies you can access relatively easily online to guide your innovation teamwork. Resources available at the LUMA Institute align particularly well with the program innovation approach.

Program Innovation Capacity Assessment

Nathan Meyer summarized results of the "Taking the Leap" and other research studies to develop a self-assessment that can be used by individual faculty or teams to identify factors that are reinforcing or resisting program innovation.

Extension Program Innovation PAR Handout FINAL.pdf

Activity: Practicing Program Innovation as a Learning Process

Meyer, Boyce, and Meyer created an activity that helps groups of faculty generate a fantastical idea for a new program resource, and then practice rapid design, construction, and evaluation approaches to develop the resource. This activity can be adapted and used in a relatively short period of time to help staff experience and understand the different dimensions of program innovation practice and how they create productive tensions that drive development.

Empathy Activity Prompt 2018.pdf

Activity: Practicing Empathetic Research to Guide Program Innovation

Meyer, Meyer, and Katrass have created an activity that helps groups of faculty focus on a fictitious design challenge, and then practice empathetic research approaches - interviews, observation, personal experiences - to guide innovation practice. This activity can be adapted and used in a relatively short period of time to help staff experience and understand different methods of empathetic research and how these augment each other to guide innovation. Meyer, Meyer, and Katrass often use this activity to encourage faculty to gather information that is then used to fuel practicing program innovation as a learning process (see handout above).

Handout: Program Innovation Framework

Meyer, Boyce and, Meyer have created a brief handout that defines and briefly describes key elements of program innovation for Extension. Use it for a quick reference or to share with others.

Handout: Program Innovation as Reflective Practice

Nathan Meyer has created a handout that describes program innovation as a process of reflective practice, or iterative cycles of trying to strengthen programming and learning from critical examination of the results.

Handout: Performance Criteria & Innovation

To aid faculty in developing work and promotion plans, Nathan Meyer also created a handout that links program innovation practices and University of Minnesota Extension performance criteria. This handout can be used to help faculty understand and map how their innovation practice may build toward promotion over time.
