Open InDesign
File > New > Document
A setup window will appear with all the document settings
In the New Document window, adjust the following:
Intent:
Print: for things like zines, posters, books
Web: for screen-based design
Number of Pages: total pages in your document
Facing Pages:
ON: for book/magazine spreads
OFF: for single-page layouts
Page Size: choose a preset (Letter, A4, etc.) or enter custom dimensions
Margins: guides for safe layout area (can set all or adjust per side)
Bleed (optional): if printing with artwork that extends to the edge, set bleed (usually 0.125 in or 3mm)
Click Create to open the document.
Go to File > Document Setup to change general page settings
Layout > Margins and Columns to adjust margins or add column guides
Use the Pages panel (Window > Pages) to add, delete, or rearrange pages
Save your document early and often: File > Save As
Use Master Pages to apply consistent layout elements across pages
Enable rulers (Cmd/Ctrl + R) and smart guides (View > Grids & Guides) for easier alignment
