Learn how to align and distribute objects with pixel-perfect accuracy using the Align panel, Smart Guides, and Snap to Guides. These tools help you tidy up your designs by ensuring elements are precisely placed and spaced, giving your layouts a professional, clean look—without needing to eyeball placements.
The Align panel allows you to align objects relative to each other or to a key object or page. It helps you maintain symmetry and neatness across your layouts.
Select multiple objects you want to align by holding Shift and clicking each one.
Go to Window > Object & Layout > Align to open the Align panel.
These adjustments can also be found in the properties panel.
Decide whether to align to Selection, to Key Object, or to Page by using the alignment dropdown menu at the bottom of the panel.
Use options like:
Align Left Edges: Aligns all selected items to the leftmost edge.
Align Horizontal Centers: Centers all selected objects horizontally.
Align Top Edges: Aligns objects to the topmost item.
The Distribute Spacing tool ensures even spacing between multiple items, such as images or text boxes.
Select three or more objects.
In the Align panel, under Distribute Spacing, check the box for Use Spacing, and enter the value you want (e.g., 0.25").
Click the Distribute Horizontal Space or Distribute Vertical Space button depending on the layout direction.
Tip: You can also set a key object to anchor spacing around a specific element. Just click one object again after selecting them all, and it will highlight as the key.
Smart Guides are dynamic alignment aids that appear automatically when you move objects near one another. They show you when edges or centers align with other objects.
Enable Smart Guides: Go to View > Grids & Guides > Smart Guides (make sure it’s checked).
Move objects around—guide lines will appear as you align objects with others.
These guides help align edges, centers, and distances effortlessly.
Snap to Guides ensures your objects "snap" into place on pre-made layout guides (like margins, columns, or custom guides), helping maintain a structured and consistent layout.
Turn on Snap to Guides: Go to View > Grids & Guides > Snap to Guides.
Try dragging an object close to a guide—you’ll feel it lock into place.
This is helpful when aligning to a document grid or custom guides created via Layout > Create Guides.
Tip: You can also toggle Snap to Grid for tighter alignment to document baselines and margins.
The combination of Align tools, Smart Guides, and Snap to Guides equips you with powerful layout control. Whether you're spacing images evenly in a catalog or aligning text blocks on a brochure, these tools ensure your work looks sharp and intentional—without tedious trial and error.
