Text Editing
Access the Type Tool
Shortcut: T
Click on your canvas to add text
Font Options [Top Toolbar or Character Panel]
Font Family - Choose your typeface.
Style - Adjust weight (e.g., Bold, Italic).
Size - Set font size (e.g., 12 pt).
Color - Click the color swatch to pick a font color.
Advanced Adjustments [Character Panel]
Open via Window > Character.
Kerning - Adjust spacing between specific character pairs.
Tracking - Modify overall spacing between characters.
Leading - Control vertical spacing between lines.
Baseline Shift - Move text up or down relative to the baseline.
Paragraph Editing
Alignment
Left Align - Aligns text to the left margin. This is the default for most text.
Center Align - Centers text between the left and right margins.
Right Align - Aligns text to the right margin.
Justification
Justify Left - Justifies text on the left side with uneven spacing on the right.
Justify Center - Centers the text, with the spacing adjusted on both sides.
Justify Right - Justifies text on the right side with uneven spacing on the left.
Justify All - Stretches text to fit the width of the text box, adjusting spacing between words and characters.
Indentation
Left Indent - Adds space between the left margin and the start of the paragraph.
Right Indent - Adds space between the right margin and the end of the paragraph.
First Line Indent - Indents just the first line of the paragraph.
Spacing
Space Before/After Paragraph - Adds space above or below the selected paragraph to separate it from other text.
Hyphenation
Enables or disables automatic hyphenation for the text. When turned on, Photoshop will break words at the end of lines using hyphens to avoid excessive spacing between words.
Use the Type Tool
Shortcut: T
Create point text (click once) or area text (click and drag).
Font Adjustments (Top Toolbar or Character Panel)
Same as Photoshop: Font Family, Size, Style, Color, etc.
Type on a Path
Use the Type Tool on a drawn path to make text follow curves or shapes.
Edit Text PointsÂ
Outline the text (the text will not be able to be changed after this step)
Use the Direct Selection Tool (A) to edit the outline of the text
Add Text Frames
Use the Type Tool (T) to create text frames.
Font Options (Top Toolbar or Character Panel)
Modify typeface, weight, size, color, and more.
Paragraph and Character Styles
Use styles for consistent formatting across large documents.
Access via Window > Styles > Paragraph Styles or Character Styles.
OpenType Features
Explore ligatures, alternate glyphs, fractions, and stylistic sets available for some fonts under the OpenType menu in the Character Panel.
Limit Font Use - Stick to 2-3 typefaces per design to maintain visual harmony.
Contrast is Key - Pair fonts with contrasting weights, sizes, or styles to create hierarchy.
Save Font Settings - In InDesign and Illustrator, save Character Styles for reusable formatting.
Preview Fonts - Use Adobe Fonts (formerly Typekit) to browse and activate fonts directly in Adobe Creative Cloud.
Avoid Rasterizing Text - Keep text editable unless necessary for effects.
