Clinical Services

Dietetic Department provides Medical Nutrition Therapy services to both in-patients and out-patients with specialization in various areas. Medical nutrition therapy is a compilation of processes which include assessment of nutrition status, nutrition diagnosis, planning, intervention and evaluation of therapy outcomes. Ultimately a good medical nutrition therapy will assist in patients’ treatment and minimizing disease’s complications.

A. In-Patient Service :

Services to in-patient are divided into following disciplines with participation in the team management approach in patient care :

- Surgery

- Pediatric

- Geriatric

- Primary care

- Critical care

- Endocrine

B. Out-Patient services :

Clinics who receive dietetic services are :

• Primary Care Clinic (RUKA)

• Specialist Clinics

a) Primary Care Clinic (RUKA)

This main out-patient clinic operates on every working day from 8.30 am - 4.30 pm. The majority of patients are referred from RUKA clinics, Family Health and Personnel Screening Clinics. Apart from that there are also referrals from other specialist clinics when there is no available dietitian at the clinic for the day. Appointment need to be made in this clinic for a consultation.

b) Specialist Clinics

Dietitians are available in specialist clinics on specific days as follows:

C. Multidiscplinary Team Management

Dietitians are also involved in patient care with of a multi-disciplinary team concept, especially in the care of diabetes patients, renal, surgical, pediatric and critical care. This method combines the skills and experience from a variety of specific health professionals to ensure patient care is more intensive and effective, and will results in better quality and cost-saving. Furthermore, it will also facilitate patient care process with discussions and more effective communication. Multi-disciplinary teams with participating dietitians are as follows:

  • Nutrition support - surgical and critical care

  • Oncology
  • Pediatrics - gastro, endocrine and genetic

Non-Clinical Services

Dietetic Department provides the supply of enteral and infant formula for in-patients use. Supervision of food services provided by the catering contractor is also done by our department. Dietetic Department is also involved in teaching & training activities for students, staffs, general public and other healthcare professionals upon request.


A. Provision of In Patient Food Supply

Dietetic Department supervise the catering contractor appointed by UMMC to provide safe & quality food provided for in-patient use. Supervision including the first step of purchasing & storage of raw material, food preparation and cooking process, until food delivery to in-patient. Our department is also responsible in the supervision of Halal accreditation and HACCP compliant were accomplish by the appointed catering contractor

B. Enteral and Infant Formula Supply

The supply of enteral and infant formula to patients by Enteral Formula Supply Unit (Unit Bekalan Makanan Enteral) is supervised by Dietetic Department:

a) Enteral Formula

Enteral liquid foods include additional food or liquid given by mouth full or through a tube into the gastrointestinal system. There are over 20 types of products in the form of RTU (ready-to-use) or powder supplied in accordance with patients’ needs.

b) Preparation and supply of infant formulas

Categories of infant formulas:

  • Standard Infant Formula
  • Premature Infant Formula
  • Follow-up Infant Formula
  • Special Formulas (such as anti-regurgitation, extensively hydrolyzed, soy, amino-acid based formulas)
  • Metabolic Formulas (various formulas for in-born errors of metabolism)

All infant formulas are supplied based on prescription by medical officers in accordance to Baby Friendly Hospital Guidelines

C. Supervision of Food Premises within UMMC

The operation of registered food premises and food supplier within UMMC is supervised by Dietetic Department:

a) Supervision of Food Safety, Health and Quality

All food premises and food supplier are required to register and will be supervised and monitored by Department of Dietetics. We are also working together with local Health Office(KKM) to organize frequent monitoring and audit to ensure food safety & quality were complied by food premises and food supplier in UMMC

b) Continuous Food Safety, Health and Quality Training

Apart from monitoring, Department of Dietetics also conduct various training regarding food safety and quality to food handler and recruiting Food Safety & Quality Auditor that were appointed within UMMC staffs
