Clarisse Betancourt Roman

Undergraduate Institution:

Bachelor of Sciences in Environmental Sciences and a minor in Geography from the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras Campus

Graduate School:

Master of Sciences in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from the University of Michigan

About Me:

Clarisse is currently working as the laboratory manager in the Microbial Systems Molecular Biology Lab. Before joining our microbiome group, Clarisse worked in the private sector (start-up) on the west coast as a microbiome consultant and as the research assistant in the Biology and the Built Environment Center under the direction of Dr. Jessica Green. During these previous experiences she gained expertise conducting multiple microbiome experiments, meeting internal milestones, running the day-to-day operations of the laboratory, and supporting graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, and research associates.

Clarisse led experiments on host-pathogen interactions during her Master’s degree. She studied the virulence of an amphibian fungal pathogen called Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis in the James Lab at the University of Michigan. Clarisse considers herself as an interdisciplinary biologist with experience working at the interface of microbiology, molecular biology, and environmental sciences. She is genuinely proud to be the first generation in her family to earn college degrees. In her spare time she likes to cook, run and spending time with family and friends.
