Sporadic cancer is a complex disease, a consequence of the interaction of genetic susceptibility with a lifetime of exposures, including nutritive and toxic compounds. Our research describes how environmental exposures influence carcinogenesis, with a focus on epigenetic mechanisms. Using molecular epidemiology techniques in population based studies and primary human tissue culture, we identify the environmental mechanisms of carcinogenesis at a number of tumor sites including head and neck, breast, colon, and lung. We utilize high-throughput sequencing and array based methods to identify novel mechanisms of environmental carcinogenesis that will result in improved cancer treatment and aid in cancer prevention.
