We Heart VR

Virtual ED

Virtual Emergency Room-Using the Oculus Rift headset and hand held controllers.

The goal of the We Heart VR project is advance the work that has been done in the area of virtual training by taking it to a new level. By using the more immersive Oculus Rift we can create an environment where a team of learners can engage in a pediatric emergency and through their use of teamwork and communication skills can impact the child’s outcome. Through the use of a Pediatric Advanced Life Support training algorithm the healthcare professionals can practice using the protocols including effective teamwork and communication skills. Thanks to the generous support of Oculus® (Facebook) this project will be able to include teams of learners comprised of nurses and physicians who are the main respondents to the pediatric cardiac arrest. This project will focus on the design of the emergency room environment, the patient, the equipment such as the cardiac monitor, defibrillator, intravenous pumps, pediatric medications and age and weight-based dosing, ambu bag and other key equipment to run a basic PALS cardiac arrest. Effective feedback algorithms and environmental fidelity is also key to success.
