Which students are eligible for the internship?
Only U-M doctoral engineering students in good standing and supervised by an ME faculty member are eligible to apply.

When will the internship take place?
You are free to select the dates of the internship. The internship should be completed by December 31, 2026.

Where is the internship expected to occur?
You will likely spend time at the University of Ghana (Legon) and/or Kwame Nkrumah University of Science & Technology (Kumasi), however, it is expected that you will work with your advisor and the program organizers to identify potential Ghanaian collaborators during the internship planning stages.

What are the expected costs for participating in this program?
You will be provided with $2000 for your flight and $2,375 for local accommodations, transportation, food, health insurance, and visa expenses for a two-month stay (cost of living in Ghana is relatively low). 

What will happen after I submit my statement of interest?
The application process is iterative. Your statement of interest will be reviewed by a panel of faculty and then applicants will discuss their motivations and goals with the panel of faculty. Following the discussion, applicants will be asked to submit a short proposal that includes details about their plan; they may be asked to iterate on the plan multiple times to ensure that the program goals are met.

What is the application process timeline?
We are currently accepting statements of interest on a rolling basis.
We aim to meet with applicants, review detailed plans, and make funding decisions approximately one month following the submission of the statement of interest.
