Welcome to the Household Influenza Vaccine Effectiveness (HIVE) study website (HUM00198212). HIVE is a research study being conducted by investigators from the University of Michigan School of Public Health with funding from the National Institutes of Allergy and Infectious Disease (NIAID).
The purpose of this study is to learn more about how well the influenza and COVID-19 vaccines work at preventing influenza and COVID-19 illnesses and how protection against these respiratory viruses develops over time. Influenza is a serious respiratory illness caused by a group of viruses. Influenza outbreaks occur every year, and vaccination is the first line of defense against influenza. The influenza vaccine (flu shot) is updated and given each year for continuing protection. How well these vaccines work may vary depending on the age of those vaccinated and how closely the viruses included in the vaccine match the viruses causing illness. We will also be studying how well COVID-19 vaccines work over time. COVID-19 is caused by a pandemic virus that can cause severe respiratory disease and spreads rapidly. COVID-19 vaccines are a major strategy for stopping pandemic spread of SARS-CoV-2. This study will also evaluate the incidence and household transmission of respiratory viruses.
We are currently recruiting households in the Ann Arbor, Michigan area to participate. Households are compensated for their time. Influenza and/or COVID-19 vaccination is NOT required for participation.
