Cochlear Mechanics: The cochlea is the remarkable organ responsible for converting sounds into neural inputs by conducting real-time signal processing over a million-fold range of energies, with sub-nanometer thresholds and exquisite frequency resolution. Using finite element based numerical approaches, we. develop and use state-of-the-art models of the response of the cochlea to complex input sounds incorporating fluid-structure interaction, viscous effects, and electromechanics. Our NIH-sponsored project seeks to understand how complex signals, such as speech sounds, are converted to neural inputs for processing by the brain. Qualifications: Modeling and numerical methods as well as interests in biomechanics, vibration, acoustics, and machine learning/optimization.
Totally Implantable Auditory Prostheses (TIAP): Our multi-disciplinary team, including engineers and surgeons, seeks to create fully implantable cochlear implants and hearing aids. In our component of this NIH sponsored project, we are designing an ultraminiature accelerometer (smaller than 1/3 a grain of rice) to attach to the middle ear bones as part of the TIAP. We work with the electrical engineering team to develop the interfacing components and with the surgeons for implantation. Prostheses development and microelectronics (bio-electronics) with interests in MEMS and simulation.
