Master's Project Guidelines

Guidelines for Students

All students have to complete a master's project. To do this, students must register for 3 credits of Math 599 or Stat 599 Independent Research Project.

1. Contact faculty members you are interested in working with, ideally the semester before you sign up for MATH 599. If you have questions or need advice, contact the ACM Program Director. 

2. Once a faculty member has agreed to supervise your project, fill out the Student Section of the Masters Thesis/Project Contract and send the Contract to the faculty member. You must elect 3 credits for Math 599 or 3 credits for Stat 599.

3. The student and the faculty member write up a Research Plan.  Click HERE to view a sample Research Plan. 

4. In order to qualify for credit, all independent study contracts should be submitted to the Dean's Office no later than the end of the first week of the Fall or Winter semester.  This assures there is ample time for the department to review, approve, and forward the submitted contract to the Dean's Office.

Once the form has the requisite signatures, a new section of Math 599 or Stat 599 will be opened and the student will be contacted by CASL Advising & Academic Success office with the approval to register for that section.

5. Your completed project would preferably be written in LaTeX, although a Microsoft Word file is also acceptable. Turn in an electronic copy of your finalized work to the faculty member supervising your project as well as the ACM Program Director.  Here are the templates for the Masters' Project.

Guidelines for Faculty

1. • Direct the student to fill out the first portion of the Masters Thesis/Project Contract and send it to you.

   • You must fill out the rest of the form. It is preferable to have at least 2 contact hours.

   • Write and attach a Research Plan [suggested template]. The naming convention is Semester.StudentLastNameAndFirstInitial.FacultyLastName.Syllabus, for example F24.JonesB.Hristova.Syllabus 

   • Submit the Masters Project Contract and the Research Plan to the ACM Program Director and to the Department Chair (casl-math-staff@umich.edu).

   • The Dean's office will create a section of Math 599 for you and the student will be notified to register.

   • After the Project has been finalized, email the completed Project Report to the ACM director, together with the MS Project Assessment [template].
