Grading:
7 Weekly Lab assignments * 10 points = 70 points
7 Weekly Discussion Board participations * 1 point = 7 points
Oracle 12c Installation = 4 points
Research Paper Proposal and Classmate Peer Review = 5 points
Research Paper = 14 points
Weekly Expectations:
· Read and answer a discussion question related to the week’s lesson
· Thoughtfully respond to at least two classmates’ postings on the discussion board
· Read the lecture notes and view the video tutorials for the week’s lecture
· Complete the weekly assignment
The following due dates apply each week of the course. Your first posting to the discussion board will be due on Friday each week and will be your individual response to the week’s discussion question. Your two responses to your classmate’s postings and your weekly assignment will be due on Monday at midnight each week. Reading and viewing the lecture prior to posting will improve the quality of your responses to the discussion question. Additionally, later this semester you will be responsible for completion of a research paper demonstrating your Linux skills and knowledge.
Submission Deadlines and Evaluation:
Your first response to the weekly discussion question must be posted by Friday each week. Your responses to two classmate's postings to the discussion board and your assignments must be completed by midnight on the Monday of each week. No points will be give for discussion board postings submitted after the due date.
The maximum points that can be earned for an assignment submitted past midnight on the due date and within two weeks of the due date will be half credit. If you do submit the assignment after the due date and within the two week time frame, please send me an email to let me know it is there and ready to be graded. No points will be given for assignments which are submitted more than two weeks past the due date at midnight.
Class Schedule:
Research Paper - In lieu of a final or midterm a research paper is required for this course.
The paper must be at least 4 pages long, double spaced and 12 point normal font. A bibliography is to be included with at least three credible sources.
Find an Open Source software project that runs on the Linux platform (A good source website for Open Source projects is (http://sourceforge.net/) Install the Open Source software you selected on your virtual machine and then write a research paper that covers the following: your rationale for using Linux for the operating system running the software; the requirements needed to run the software including any network infrastructure dependencies needed; a description of the software; file system location and instructions on how to run the software; a description of industries that could potentially use the software; a summary of research on similar available software packages both commercial and open source; a description of any companies currently using the software; your recommendations on ways Linux could be utilized to make the software architecture secure, highly available and load balanced; and recommended strategies to backup the data that the system stores and to recover it in case of a disaster.
The paper will be graded on your research, analysis, insight, and creativity in applying the concepts we have learned thus far in our course. This research paper will consist of two parts: a proposal (4 points) and the final paper (15 points).
The proposal, should be a paragraph posted to the discussion board (Research Paper Proposal and Classmate Peer Review forum) which describes your research paper topic including project chosen and a summary of your ideas related to the project. All proposals will be reviewed by members of the class and the instructor.
To receive the three points for the proposal, you must post your proposal, review the proposals of your classmates, and post a thoughtful review of at least one unique classmate's proposal. Your proposal and your posted comment on one classmate's proposal combined will be worth five points.
