2016 - 2017 SCHOOL YEAR:
September: We learned how to be a global citizen by cooperating to build a "clubhouse".
October: Students shared ideas why we should learn about other people. Some of their answers included: "if we visit there, we will know things about them, we will know how to talk to them, it's fun to learn about how other people live", etc.
For Hispanic heritage month, we played a popular kids game in Mexico and talked about what Hispanic countries are and where most of them are located in relation to the US.
November: During our Jump Rope for Heart unit, we discussed the origin of jumping rope!
November: We discussed the importance of water instead of sugary drinks in our diet and the need for clean drinking water around the world.
December: Students learned how to jump at least 1 Chinese jump rope pattern. In groups of 3 or 4, they also read information about China and picked the most interesting fact to share with the rest of the class.
January: FENCING IN PE
We learned how fencing has been part of the Olympic games since their inception. It is a safe and lifelong sport played around the whole world.

March: KARATE IN PE
Teachers from UPLEVEL MARTIAL ARTS visited to teach students about martial arts from around the world. Students learned how Taekwando originated in Korea, Kung Fu in China, and Karate in Japan. They learned that this fighting art form was developed during a time of war out of necessity, while today it is practiced more often from a desire to develop self-discipline, self-defense, and physical fitness.
March: FOLK DANING AT THE INTERNATIONAL FAIR
Students learned a variety of European folk dances at the international fair to experience firsthand how music and dance can bring people together and help celebrate culture.
April: In PE, students learned about the history of TUG OF WAR across cultures.
Students learned how tug of war in PE (and field day) can be a test not only of strength, but of teamwork and cooperation that has transcended time and spread throughout many cultures of the world!
2015 - 2016 SCHOOL YEAR:
TINIKLING
Tinikling originated long ago in the Philippines on the island of Leyte.
The wet climate of the island made it highly suitable for growing crops such as rice.
Farmers and field hands working in the rice paddies had ample opportunity to observe the behavior
of the tikling birds that lived in the area as they searched for food along the field edge.
Imitating the hopping movements became a traditional Filipino dance.
Today, dancing pairs are barefoot and wear traditional Filipino costumes. (usually male and female)
We performed at the international fair!

We used yoga poses to stretch at various points throughout the year.

In PE class, we also practiced our own form of Tinikling- with jump bands instead of bamboo sticks.
Cricket
Cricket is believed to have begun possibly as early as the 13th century as a game in which country boys bowled at a tree stump or at the hurdle gate into a sheep pen. This gate consisted of two uprights and a crossbar resting on the slotted tops; the crossbar was called a bail and the entire gate a wicket. It became England’s national summer sport and over the years Cricket has evolved into a very popular international sport, particularly in
Australia, India, Pakistan, the West Indies, and the British Isles. Cricket is played with a bat and ball and involves two competing sides (teams) of 11 players. Scores in the hundreds are common in cricket. Matches in cricket can range from informal weekend afternoon encounters on village greens to top-level international contests spread over five days in test matches played by leading professional players in grand stadiums.

2013-2014 SCHOOL YEAR
The Chinese even have a year of the dragon, and it is said that anyone born in this year will be healthy, wealthy, and wise, all of the things which the dragon of the East represents. The year of the dragon is also said to be a very prosperous year for the people of China. Because the Chinese hold dragons in such great respect, there are many tales about dragons and the wealth that they bring to the people of China.
Dragon Dance
The most vibrant and spectacular way of expressing fondness for the dragon is the dragon dance. This has evolved from what was a ritual rain dance into a popular entertainment performed during the period from Spring Festival until the Lantern Festival. The second day of the second lunar month is the Han people's special time - 'Dragon Heads-raising Day'. People could not tonsure their hair from the start of the lunar New Year until then. The activities for celebration are still for a good rain. Other big festivals related to the dragon include the Dragon Boat Festival and those of ethnic groups like Zhuang, Yao, Hani, and so on.

In PE, we discussed differences in symbolism of the dragon in Eastern vs. Western cultures of the world. We finished our discussion by playing “Catch the Dragon’s Tail”. Students formed a line (the dragon) and held on tight to the shoulders of the player in front of them. The first player in line (the head) tried to catch the last player (the tail). The students worked together to try and keep the head from being caught by the tail.

Last school year, we celebrated the 2014 Winter Olympics in PE class by discussing the different Olympic events, how the Olympics unite the global community, and having our own "Bobsled" race.
