Development of a noncanonical redox cofactor platform in Saccharomyces cerevisiae
June, 12, 2026
Congratulations to Dr. Black and the team on their new publication, "Development of a noncanonical redox cofactor platform in Saccharomyces cerevisiae" published in Metabolic Engineering!
The study established an orthogonal redox system in yeast using nicotinamide mononucleotide, NMN(H), as a noncanonical cofactor that operates independently of the cell’s native NAD(P)H metabolism. By rewiring glycolysis, the researchers used glucose as a source of reducing power for NMNH and selectively converted citral to citronellal while suppressing unwanted over-reduction to alcohols.
