Call for all University of Alberta residents rotating through PEM, will be reported by the PEM Medical Education Program Coordinator (MEPC) and paid according to the PARA Agreement. PARA calculates any entitlement to an on-call stipend.
Call for non-UofA residents should be reported to your home program for payment.
All shifts scheduled until midnight or later will be reported as "Emergency call" and are eligible for a call stipend.
Please ensure that the schedule reflects any missed shifts and report any variances to the PEM Medical Education Program Coordinator (MEPC) as soon as possible.
The Family Medicine Coordinator has indicated that it is NOT permissible to bring your Medical Student to your PEM rotation.
There are small lockers available to store your personal items. They are not large (approx. 12" square). You will need to bring your own lock. These lockers are for use while you are on shift only.
If you are sick, you must call in at 780.407.3737 and speak directly to the staff physician you are schedules to work with. Do not leave a message with a the clerk or other staff member.
You must also follow up with an email to the Program Administrator (pedsemerg@ualberta.ca) so that the master schedule can be noted and make-up shift(s) can be organized.
The minimum number of shifts required for your Pediatric Emergency Medicine rotation is as follows:
a minimum of 14 shifts on a standard 28-day rotation (however the number of shifts may be increased if the length of the rotation is longer than 4-weeks) must be worked (this number will be adjusted accordingly it you have an approved leave during your rotation or if you are working a statutory holiday)
vacation requests are NOT permitted on this rotation
shifts CANNOT be stacked to allow for additional days off
a minimum 2 shifts must be over night (2400-0700)
5-6 shifts must be worked on the weekend, number of weekend shifts may be increased if the length of rotation is greater than four weeks (weekend is defined as a Friday overnight shift, or any Saturday or Sunday shift)
the remainder of your shifts will be divided between days and evening
any missed shifts must be made up within the Block in order to complete the rotation
Failure to meet these requirements will result in an unsuccessful rotation.
No changes to the schedule will be permitted unless they are approved by Dr Arent. In order to maintain a balanced schedule, you must first try to coordinate a shift trade with another learner on the schedule (instead of requesting open shifts). If you are unsuccessful in coordinating a trade, another option may be considered.
All requests must be emailed to Dr Robin Arent (robin.arent@albertahealthservices.ca) and copy to the Program Administrator (pedsemerg@ualberta.ca) for approval.
