About Us
We are the Graduate Students' Association for the Department of Medicine (DoM) at the University of Alberta.
While many of us have close ties to clinical work, not all DoM graduate students are medical students or clinicians.
DoM graduate students pursue their research in buildings, labs and settings all over the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry campus buildings, and often work closely with other departments and faculties.
Our student body comprises the entirety of the graduate student body within the 14 divisions of the DoM.
Saymon Tejay

Saymon is a graduate student in the division of cardiology and is investigating the role of tumor secreted factors in patients developing chemotherapy-induced cardiotoxicity (CIC). His goal is to establish a biomarker that would distinguish patients that are more susceptible to CIC, as a reliable one does not exist. Saymon hopes to schedule pertinent and impactful career development events while advocating for students' academic success. Saymon is a highly enthusiastic, resourceful, and reliable team player who endeavors to represent graduates’ voices, advocate for their wellness, and promote the communications between students and the faculty.
Areli Lorenzana

Areli is a graduate student in the Division of Cardiology who is researching redox-sensitive proteins as potential therapeutic targets in the emerging field of cardio-oncology. Her primary objective is to unravel the underlying mechanisms by which chemotherapeutic agents induce cardiotoxicity and identify novel targets for therapy.
Aside from her research, Areli is also adept at managing organizational and operational tasks. She has been appointed to the role of VP Financia;, where she is poised to make a meaningful impact on the graduate student community. Her ultimate goal is to contribute to the advancement of medical knowledge and improve the overall graduate student experience within the department.
