Field Line Streaching

An active region AR 7999 on 1996 Nov. 26 is shown with potential lines (panel A) and with transformed (radially stretched, K=3.5) field lines (panel B) (Gary and Alexander 1999). The arrows indicate the direction of the loci of the apexes of the southern field lines for the two cases. Such transformations are indicative of correction necessitated by coronal outflows and high-b. Observations of low-lying cusped loops is also indicative of high-b regions within 2Rs (Heidi and Hundhausen 1996; Strong 1994).
