Carrollton R-VII School District - Let’s Talk About…School Health

Hello and welcome to the Health Services web page of the Carrollton R-VII School District Website. We would like to take this opportunity to introduce ourselves and provide information about what we do for the district and for your child/children. We have provided links for head lice information, sick day and medication administration policy guidelines to help answer any questions you might have. Your child’s health is extremely important to us, so please feel free to contact us at the numbers listed.

If you have any questions or concerns about your child or school health services, please don't hesitate to contact the school nurse in your child’s building.

What do school nurses do?
Monitor absenteeism by contacting parents/guardians when children are absent from school
Provide health care to students / staff and refer to doctor’s care if needed
Provide screenings and referrals for vision, hearing, dental and scoliosis
Promote a healthy school environment
Monitor the implementation of the Wellness Policy Guidelines
Ensure that all students are immunized in accordance to state law
Conduct health related in-services for staff
Promote health education by providing health information to students, parents and staff
Develop and evaluate school health policies
Provide case management for students with special health care needs
Develop Emergency Action Plans /Individualized Health Care Plans for students that have specific medical needs
Ensure that all students have a completed health summary on file
Perform and assist with specialized individual health care needs
Application of Fluoride Varnish

Health Concerns

If you have not filled out and returned a completed Health Summary please do so ASAP. It is important for us to know of any health concerns so that we can assist in providing a safe environment for your child and communicate with teachers to provide assistance with your child’s learning. A doctor’s order must be provided if your child has restrictions in their diet or activity. Please note that a child’s dislike of a particular food or drink cannot be considered as a restriction. All children will be required to take what is on their meal plate, unless a written doctor’s order is provided.

Emergency Information

Please make sure that you have provided your child’s school with updated phone numbers and emergency contacts in case your child is sick or injured. If changes occur throughout the year please call to update your contact information.

Medical Emergencies

In life threatening emergencies or when immediate medical care is suspected, the school is responsible for acting on behalf of the student. Emergency medical services must be activated by calling 911. The principal or other supervisor must act on behalf of the parent/guardian when medical care and response time may be critical.

*In life threatening emergencies, 911 will be called first and parent / guardian second.

Absentees

If your child will be absent from school or will be late to school we ask that you please call and inform the school. If we do not receive a call from you, the school nurse / staff will be calling to verify on the well being of the child.

Vision Screening

All students in grades Kindergarten 1, 3, and 5 will have a vision screening. They will be done by Premier Eye Care Associates and the school nurses. Referrals will be made as needed.

Hearing Screening

All students in grades Kindergarten K, 1, and 3 will be screened by the school nurses. Referrals will be made as needed.

Physical and Dental Exams

At this time, children are not required to have physical and dental exams to start the school year. However, if your child plays or participates in MSHSAA activities they will be required to have a physical and complete the required documents. We do strongly encourage parents to take their children for routine physical and dental exams.

Medications

All medications, prescriptions, over-the-counter (OTC), including herbal preparations, vitamins, and or medications that claim to be medicinal or performance enhancing must be provided by the parent/guardian.

(Prescriptions or any medications that has a DRUG FACTS label present on manufacturer package, needs a consent for administration form completed by parent/guardian).

- All medications must be delivered to and from the school office by a parent/guardian. Unused medications may be picked up anytime during school hours throughout the year by a parent/guardian.
- Medications not picked up by the end of the school year will be disposed of accordingly.
- Carrollton R-VII School cannot administer any kind of medication without a written consent form from the parent/guardian.
- The first dose of any medication will not be given by school personnel.
- Expired medications will not be administered.
- Medications administered by school personnel will be kept in a locked and secured place. These policies and procedures are put into place to protect both the student and the employees who administer the medication.

Prescription medication will be administered upon receipt of:

1) Completed medication administration form signed by parent/guardian.

2) The prescription medication in the original pharmacy container with a current pharmacy label with a prescription date, the child’s full name, name of the drug and dosage, times to be given and physician’s name.

3) Prescription medication will be given only as directed on the pharmacy label. Medications prescribed by a physician must be administered as the physician ordered.

4) All prescribed medications that require a dose of ½ tablet should be cut in half by the pharmacy or parent/guardian before being brought to school. Otherwise, the medication will not be given.

Over the Counter (OTC), herbal, vitamins, and or medications that claim to be medicinal or performance enhancing will be administered upon receipt of:

5) Completed medication administration form signed by parent/guardian.

6) Medication in the original manufacturer packaging and have a current date of expiration (not expired).

7) The medication will be given only as directed on original manufacturer packaging unless specific written instructions from a physician are provided.

8) All medications must have the child's full name labeled on the medication.
