Words can be expressed in two different ways, one way is by speech, and the other is movement. Dancing is about telling a story without moving your lips or speaking. Dance season is usually around winter time during basketball season. Dance usually lasts almost up until baseball season. Dance is moving rhythmically to music, usually following a set sequence of steps.

Ingrid Skogen, a varsity kick and jazz dancer at Moorhead High School, explained more about the dance team. When asked how varsity doing this year she explained that, “the team could be doing better but we have improved a lot this past season. For jazz we started out very strong but ended up getting lazy at a few competitions, but later got our scores up. Kick needed some work at the beginning of the season then right when things started to turn around by points getting higher and not getting last place more and more people started to get hurt. It’s unusual to get in 2nd or 3rd place but we have not been getting last and we think that is okay.” Positivity is always good when competing in any tournament.

When dancing, how does a team pull of such a great routine? “When the season started there were many people, including me, where this is their first year on the team so we had to spend time getting to know each other, but once we got over the beginning phase, I think we work very well together. It helps a lot by getting corrections from team members, not just the coaches or being able to encourage each other while we are dancing,” said Skogen.

Skogen says the team’s coaching staff does a good job giving everyone an equal chance at being in the front or involved in more exciting parts during each dance. “Throughout the whole season the dances change every week, so we are always learning new parts of the same dancem” stated Skogen.

Trying out for sports can be a very hard thing to do, feeling not good enough or inadequate for the coaches. In life there is a motto everyone seems to use whenever something comes their way. “I felt the same exact way, but all you can do is try and see what happens. You might regret it if you don’t it,” said Skogen. Not everything seems to be easy, but trying for something might be nice. Go for it, because like any teenager would say, “you only live once.” Skogen feels like any person would when trying out for a sport, but she came on top being on the Varsity jazz and kick teams. Even if someone is looking for a friend, a team is so much better than being alone. “I love getting to be so close with all of my teammates. We talk all the time not only at practice but also during school. It’s just so fun,” said Skogen.
