Math League has already started this year?! The answer to that question is yes and in case some people didn’t catch that, it is a mathematics competition and a club. This year is extra special for this team involving the seniors, juniors, and freshman that have won both meets they have competed in.

The fun, social opportunities math league exerts are the participants being able to meet each other in the area who love math! Working together means a lot to these students especially because they haven’t been to state up until some of them were sophomores and freshman which was about two years ago. The whole lot is excited to see what's in store for them this upcoming season of math league.

With former adviser Mr. Olmanson moving away, Dawn Hanson has taken his spot as the new math league coach this year. Having a love for math, she is very excited for the new season and is looking forward to working with students that carry that same passion. Hanson said there are a lot of benefits to joining math league. “Students have the opportunity to meet new people they haven’t spoken to before and show off their skills they haven’t anywhere else.”

Universities love seeing academic scholars joining clubs and making the best out of their school. Math League provides students with challenging mathematical skills and helps them learn the concepts of the skills. David Wichman, a senior at Moorhead high says, “I get the chance to do something I love which results in, hopefully, getting accepted into the college I want.” Being in any type of school activity will strengthen students goals and achieve them later on when they graduate. It’s merely another benefit displayed out there for anyone wanting to higher up their education.

The students involved in Math League have shown great adaptiveness learning skills and have shown that they can compete and win against other schools. Hanson has said that their biggest competition so far is Alexandria. She has no doubt that if they try hard enough like the many other times they have competed, they will win. Winning the next meets could mean that they will end up going to nationals which is a huge deal for them. Past years proved that the students have been going to nationals for awhile now and this year, they do not want to destroy the chain.

There are 22 peers in Math League, ranging from different grades and standards. This system is allowing them to do practice work and complete assignments as well. The last month has them on their feet guessing and answering topics regarding their weaknesses and strengths. Good luck to all them on their next meet on Dec. 18.
