Dr Gilbert - Head of Department
A-levels: Maths, Further Maths, History, Music and General Studies
Degree: MSci Mathematical Sciences, PhD Mathematics (Birmingham), PGCE (Oxford)
I have always enjoyed Maths and during my PhD I spent time visiting schools and supporting undergraduates in developing their Maths skills. I decided I would apply to the PGCE in Oxford and was placed at Cooper. I’ve been here ever since!
Mrs McMillan - Lead Practitioner
A-levels: Maths, Further Maths, Physics, Chemistry and General Studies
Degree: Joint Honours Masters in Engineering and Material Science from Trinity College, Oxford
Biography: At school I loved Maths and Science so combined these two disciplines in a 4 year Engineering degree at Oxford University. I was sponsored by Corus (formerly British Steel) and so, on graduating, moved to Scunthorpe to work on one of the largest steelworks in the UK. After nearly three years there, I relocated to Oxfordshire and worked for BMW Mini at the Cowley plant as a Process Area Manager in the Body in White section. However, I had always had a desire to share my knowledge and love of Maths with young people and so decided to re-train as a teacher. I was fortunate enough to do this at The Cooper School through the Graduate Teacher Programme (ie I trained “on the job” rather than having to go back to college) in 2002-3 and I have never looked back! I love my job; every day is different and every day there is something new to learn.

A-Levels: Maths, Chemistry, Psychology and Ctizenship
Degree: BSc Mathematics with Statistics (Oxford Brookes), PGCE (UCL)
Biography: I never knew what I wanted to be, but when I had to make some career decisions whilst at university I thought, I would like to work with people and with maths, so being a Maths Teacher makes perfect sense! I trained in Essex, worked in Oxford and now I’m thrilled to be at the Cooper School. My favourite thing to do whilst not working is to travel, I have trekked to Mt Everest basecamp, and have seen so many fantastic countries, next on the list is to complete my scuba diving course in Indonesia!

At 18, I moved to the South-West to fulfil my childhood dream of becoming a maths teacher and had great fun at University along the way. Mr Lloyd - Head of Year
A-Levels - PE, Biology and psychology
Degree - BA sports and coaching studies (Oxford Brookes University), PGCE (Swansea Metropolitan University).
Biography - Having played rugby for a number of years in both England and Wales, being a Maths teacher wasn't the path I was intending on going down, but I always planned to be a teacher at some point. I've always enjoyed maths and my degree was very maths focused, so when the opportunity to teach maths came up, I took it with both hands and I have never looked back. I love teaching and there is no better feeling than seeing that light bulb moment from a student who learns something new.

A Levels: Mathematics, Biology and Art & Design
Degree: BSc Mathematics (Nottingham Trent University), PGCE (St Mary’s University)
Biography: For as long as I can remember I always wanted to teach and Maths has always been my favourite subject and so many of the things I have chosen to do have been to gain as much experience as I could to help me to my end goal of becoming a great maths teacher. I began tutoring primary school children Maths whilst I was still completing my A levels and took an internship in a school whilst I was at University. Throughout my education I would be eager to help my peers with topics they were struggling with and when I would babysit as a teenager I seemed to always find something to teach the little ones I was looking after. I spent 3 years living in Nottingham studying at NTU then continued my studies at St Mary’s in Twickenham where I completed my PGCE. When I am not working I enjoy being outdoors; walking my dog in lots of beautiful places, rock climbing, water sports and travelling. I have completed my PADI Open Water Diving course in Thailand and been on some amazing dives in Barbados.
