Digital Photography

Course Description:

Scholars will have the opportunity to learn and demonstrate an understanding of digital photography which will include four areas of concentration; how to use the camera’s manual settings, lighting, composition and digital editing. Scholars will study the rules of art and principles of design that come together to make a successful photograph. Class will consist of learning to “see” light, study of famous photographers, how to manipulate the camera to create their desired outcomes, and time to take photos both inside and out. Scholars will come away from this course with the ability to read light and compose a beautiful photograph using the manual settings on the camera.

Class expectations:

Be kind, positive, respectful and prepared. If you are absent, please check the calendar on our website as well as google classroom to complete any work you may have missed. If you fail to turn in an assignment on time, late work is accepted by Friday of that week, with a penalty of 10 points per day. If you are able, please bring your digital slr camera to class every day. ASK allows us to be around campus and in the hallways to practice our photography so it is imperative to be trustworthy and responsible ASK scholars.

Evaluation:

Scholars will be evaluated by total points earned. The point values vary based on the difficulty and sustained effort required. Demonstration of learning activities include: homework, projects, quizzes, tests and daily classwork.

Course Requirements:

1st Quarter- 40%

2nd Quarter-40%

1st Semester 40% first quarter, 40% second quarter, 20% final exam

3rd Quarter- 40%

4th Quarter-40%

2nd Semester 40% first quarter, 40% second quarter, 20% final exam

Supplies:

USB flash drive (at least 8GB)

DSLR digital camera with manual settings (Class will have a couple of cameras to use in class, but it would be more beneficial for each scholar to have own)

SD Memory Card (Any GB will work for our class)

What camera do I purchase?

Scholars will need a Digital SLR camera.

New and/or used DSLR cameras can be found on the sites listed below. You can also look at Amazon, Craigslist, Ebay, Best Buy, Walmart, etc. Many Digital SLR cameras, come with a lens, but make sure you check, it could be the camera body only. If you are buying a lens, you can choose the length. A versatile option would be the zoom lens that is often included with the camera kit. Many cameras come with a flash, if it does not have a flash, no need to purchase one.
