Ans 1) Africa is called a dark continent because:
It has equatorial forests.
On all four main longitudes and latitudes some big and small dense deserts are situated.
It took long period of time to research the inner parts of Africa.
It remained unexplored for a very, very long time , right until the middle of the 19th century.
As there is a smooth coastline, there are less harbours and so they could not be used to travel into the interior at the continent.

The rivers flowed towards the sea, they formed high waterfall. So they could not be used to travel into the interior of the continent.
